We begin with love, because love is where every human story begins. Six writers from Nigeria, the United States and Rwanda follow it into its many shapes: love as geography, as time, as weight, as failure, and as the ordinary Tuesday afternoon.

Our belief

Stories orient us.

Before maps, people found their way by story: which mountain was sacred, which river was dangerous, which season to plant. The stories a people tell shape what they believe is possible. Onkọ̀wé, Yoruba for the writer, exists to help many be oriented rightly in this world, with stories.

Compass

Direction

A story tells you which way you are facing. It gives north a name and makes the unfamiliar navigable.

Clock

Continuity

A story turns the flow of days into beginning, middle and end. Without it, time is noise. With it, time becomes memory.

Map

Territory

A story charts grief, joy, betrayal and grace, so that when you arrive there yourself, someone has already left directions.
